“Give alms of what is inside, and everything will be clean for you.” Lk. 11:37-41
Today’s Gospel account tells us about the invitation that a Pharisee made to Jesus to come to his house to eat. The emphasis is on what Jesus said to the Pharisee when he was surprised that Jesus did not wash his hands before eating. Jesus does not stop teaching; He is always doing it. Whether in the crowd, in the synagogue, on the mountain, at the table with his friends or with the Pharisees, He is always teaching something. Today He speaks to us “of what is inside”. We could say that this teaching is complemented by the first reading, when St. Paul tells the Galatians “the only thing that counts is an active faith in the practice of love”. It is that good works, those in which we seek the good of others before our own, come from our deepest being, from what is inside. Today, with what action can I practice the love that I carry within?
