Mt. 5:38-42 “To him who slaps you on the cheek, to him also present the other.”
Today’s Gospel puts us in front of what is considered to be the touchstone of Christianity, and we could say, perhaps, that it is also the essential contribution that we as Christians must make to the humanization of this world that appears more and more anchored in “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”. Turning the other cheek, giving twice as much as they ask of you, giving your tunic to those who need it… they are simply human acts; acts that arise from the awareness of our own dignity as children of God, respectful of the dignity of another human being whom we also consider as a child of God. This way of looking at the other is the basis of authentic Christian love, the one we learn from Jesus when He tells us: “Love one another as I have loved you”.
