My heart is moved with pity for the crowd. (Mk. 8:1-10)
There is so much going on in this Gospel. Thousands of people have been with Jesus for three days. There is little food and Jesus fears dismissing them without sustenance. They have stayed with him because they are also spiritually hungry. The apostles have no idea how to respond to their physical hunger. When Jesus asks how much they have, they answer matter-of-factly: seven loaves and a few fish. We may feel like the disciples; that we do not have enough to address the situation. Still, we are called to give what we have for the sake of the mission, even if it seems too meager, for in the hands of the Lord, there will be enough…more than we could ever imagine.
