“Jesus came, took her by the hand, and lifted her up.” Mk. 1:29-39
Bible scholars help us discover that Jesus’ teaching is underscored by his gestures. The hands have great significance because they can heal or wound, welcome or reject. In the story, Jesus arrives at Peter’s house and finds his mother-in-law sick. Although it is Saturday, He approaches her, takes her hand and lifts her up, in a gesture of closeness and support that transmits new strength. She gets up to serve them, because the people who come to her house are worth more than all Saturdays. In the light of this text, let us ask ourselves: What is our “extending our hand” like? Do we make excuses not to do it, when and to whom?
