“Be calm, it is I, do not be afraid.” Mk 6:45-52

After blessing, breaking, giving, and sharing, Jesus needs to pray. He sends His disciples to the other shore while He sends the people away. At night, with a strong wind, He sees the disciples having trouble and approaches them by walking on water. The boat and the weariness symbolize the community that believes in and loves Jesus, but does not quite discover his mystery. “They hadn’t understood about the bread,” says Mark. Jesus, patient and understanding, invites them to trust: “It is I, do not be afraid.” Let us remember today our difficulties in recognizing God when things are not going well, and let us listen to his voice: “It is I, do not be afraid.”
