TESTIMONY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST
“I am the voice of the one who cries in the desert… There is someone among you whom you do not know.” Jn. 1:19-28
Jesús has now grown up, but He has been living like any neighbor’s son for 30 years. The fact is that it is in ordinary human life that God makes himself present and saves through his gracious closeness. The Jewish authorities note the presence of John, who preaches a baptism of conversion; it seems that something new is coming. But who is this that dares to baptize? John does not think he is worthy to even loosen the strap of the sandals for the one who is coming, and he says: “Among you there is someone you do not know.” The challenge for Jews and Christians of all times is to recognize the One who is among us and we do not know. Let us become sensitive to this truth and make it a matter of prayer. When, in what and in whom, do we not recognize God?
