SOLEMNITY OF SAINTS PETER AND PAUL 2 Tim. 4:6-8, 17-18 Mt. 16:13-19.
The Word of this day brings us great richness: first, the strength of personal prayer and of a believing community, as was the case with Peter and his community. Then we contemplate Paul’s authenticity of his farewell: he fought with all his strength so that the news of the Kingdom of God would reach as far as possible, in the midst of enormous difficulties. Finally, the Gospel looks at Peter’s spontaneous but firm confession to Jesus: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Jesus knows Peter well, He knows of his faith and his love for him, but also of his frailty. However, because of that faith, Jesus makes him the cornerstone of that Community of brothers and sisters, which will be light and support to make the journey to the Father’s House.
