April 2.   Jesus and His Father.   Jn. 5:17-30

Jesus, in the encounter with the Jews who reproach him for breaking the law by healing a paralytic, openly declares: “My Father continues to work and I also work”: a profoundly revealing statement of Jesus’ relationship with God; that God who is Father, a God the Father who has sent him to save and rescue people,  of the paralysis to which it is reduced when only the letter of the law prevails. Calling God the Father and feeling one with Him, working to rescue man in his dignity, is also the fundamental attitude of those of us who call ourselves children of God and brothers and sisters. It is also what Jesus continues to express in the verses that follow; the same one that He taught us when He invited us to pray like Him and with Him saying: “Our Father…” For the Jews that attitude of Jesus was scandalous, but for Him, as for us, it is our reason for being.
