Your sins are forgiven
Jesus looks up and sees a stretcher being lowered through the roof. Around the hole made in the roof are the four friends of the paralytic. It must have been quite a surprise to the crowd and more so for the owner of the house! Jesus responds to this act of love and friendship by addressing the man as “child” and forgiving his sins. We can suppose that the friends were disappointed initially. This wasn’t what they were seeking for their friend. Others murmured their complaints because Jesus was taking the authority of God. After Jesus calls them out on that, he turns to the man and tells him to stand and walk. What are the paralyses in our own lives for which Jesus commands: “Stand up, pick up your mat and walk.”
