January 13—Mark 1:14-20

Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men

Jesus passes by Simon and Andrew, and then a little later he passes by James and John.  We don’t know what happened prior to this “passing by.” Regardless, there was something remarkably compelling about Jesus to cause these four fishermen to drop their nets and follow him into an uncertain future. The men, moreover, were from Galilee, not exactly a prestigious part of the world. Our own stories of responding to the call to follow Jesus may or may not have been quite so dramatic, but we have been called also to drop our nets, our attachments, to be effective disciples sharing the gospel in our particular contexts. It is an uncertain future, but we can be assured that our future is in trustworthy hands.
