When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity
Jesus has been teaching for much of the day. He realizes that it is impossible to send them away without something to eat and challenges his disciples to respond to their needs. They take Jesus quite literally and only refer to a few loaves of bread and some fish. Jesus takes the loaves and fish and makes it enough for all. The disciples probably didn’t catch all of the teachings in the feeding of the 5000, but they would later. We, too, are called to go out and discover the needs of the people. While we can never match the generosity of God, we are to be men and women ready to extend our hand to others. How can we go deeper into this call to be men and women for others?
