This generation will be asked to account for the blood of the prophets.
Today we find Jesus at one of the most critical moments of his public life; The setting is a dinner to which He had been invited along with Pharisees and doctors of the law. Jesus, listening to their legalistic discussions, devoid of mercy, confronts them with the falsehood of their conduct with the prophets who preceded them, whom their fathers killed and for whom now they build mausoleums. Jesus knows well that He and His followers will suffer the same fate and that is why He says very forcefully to his listeners: “You, this generation, will be asked to give an account of all the blood of prophets shed since the beginning of time.” From then on, those who listened to him insisted on setting all kinds of traps to test him. What does this text tell us about this world of ours in which prophets are also being killed?
