August 9 (Matt 16:24-28)

What can a man give to regain his life?

Yesterday’s reflection on Psalm 51 prepares us to embrace the cross as a disciple of Christ.  We know that the disciples didn’t understand Jesus’ many references to the cross nor his teaching that whoever follows him will have to “deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.”  Jesus also reminds us that we have to die so that we can live.  What does that mean in your life? The weight of our particular cross can seem too heavy at times, and we may need to ask for help.  Are you willing to ask?  Are you willing to be asked to help another?  Throughout this journey to the many Calvaries that come into our lives, let each of us pray for the freedom to let go and to trust that our lives are in God’s hands.  There is no better place to be.
