Some ask him questions in order to set traps for him: Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife? Jesus replies that this is not God’s plan, even though Moses allowed them to do so, “because of the hardness of their heart.” Jesus is proposing something new, to return to the first plan of the Creator. To be faithful to the commitments made before God is not easy and Jesus is teaching something not heard before, but something difficult, such as taking up the cross, renouncing oneself, embracing a faithful and demanding discipleship. Are we self-serving people, or do we strive, out of love, to be better and better husbands, wives, fathers or mothers, lay or religious? With whose help do we confront our difficulties? How do we resolve them? Are we going in the way of Jesus, following him as our Master and Lord? Let us allow ourselves to be taught by Him.
