“I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”
Jesus, very consciously, is saying goodbye… The disciples still don’t know… Let’s get into the scene, into the feelings of Jesus. Apart from the sufferings that await him, his heart is weighed down by the situation in which the disciples will be left: alone, fearful, disoriented… persecuted… That would be the context in which He says to them the first words of today’s Gospel: “Do not let your hearts be troubled… Where I’m going, you know the way.” Fortunately, there was one, Thomas, who dared to express how lost everyone was… to him we owe these words of Jesus, a powerful summary of his life and mission: “I am the way, the truth and the life”. Let us now enter into the feelings of the disciples. The Gospel does not bring them, we can intuit them in prayer and thank those words of Jesus that free us from getting lost in the labyrinth of life.
