What is that which attracts so many?”

Jesus has already become popular among his people with several miracles on behalf of the sick. They admire him and follow him. In this story, Jesus is the first to think of the hunger of the crowd that has come to listen to him. But it is true what Philip says: it takes money, and a lot of it, to feed everyone. Among them they are all poor. Jesus is going to do something, but He will ask each one of them to put in what little they have left…to the disciples what they have, even if it is “five loaves and two fish.” This will help them to envision a different path: money is not everything. And we already know what’s next: organizing people; giving thanks and sharing; making sure that nothing gets wasted…

So many problems in our world would be solved if we learned to share… But we’d rather buy than share… We need that sensitivity that Jesus had in the face of every human need.

Let us ask for grace, both to understand that all the goods of the earth are for everyone… and to act!
