“This is what the Lord has done for me” Lk. 1:5-25

Today’s Gospel introduces us to Zechariah and Elizabeth, two elders who will conceive John the Baptist. They have a special mission in the plan of salvation. The child they will have has been chosen and loved before his birth, and his birth is announced in a special way. It is the Spirit of the Lord Who moves them; Their mission demands sacrifices. Zechariah’s mysterious silence (being unable to speak) probably comes from the joy of an overwhelming message, too surprising and wonderful to be expressed in words.

In these vocational stories there is the fact that the people are weak, that salvation is freely granted by God, that sterility gives way to fertility, that sacrifices are always demanded. And because of that, the Spirit of God will be the one who will move those chosen people.

All this is also applicable and true in us since we are called to prepare the way of the Lord.
