Mt. 8:5-17 “A single word from you will suffice to heal me.”
Jesus today continues to show us how his mission is to heal this world of every sickness and disease; the healings that the Gospel tells us are particularly significant and eloquent: He heals the servant of a pagan and He heals a woman. The attitude and words of the Roman officer are surprising; they reflect compassion, humility, faith at all costs: “I have a paralyzed servant who suffers enormously”; “I am not worthy of your entering my house”; “A word from you will suffice to heal him.” It is not easy to find so much humanity in a man accustomed to commanding and to being obeyed and served. Jesus himself is surprised to see the faith of this man, in contrast to the faith of so many who feel they are members of the chosen people and unbelievers in the face of everyone else. What faith and confidence do I have in that healing Word of Jesus?
