Today’s Gospel tells us that the one who works evil cannot bear the light because the light shines where there is truth, justice, and sincerity. Jesus came to be the light of the world as Isaiah had said: “The people who walked in darkness saw a great Light”; and the light came, but people preferred darkness; that is the great tragedy that has been leading us away from God. It is not easy to open our eyes to the light, to expose our works to the light, so that it may be seen that they are done according to God. When we look at our works in the light of Jesus and compare our criteria with his, we often see that we have strayed from the light. That is what the examen from the Ignatian spirituality calls us to do every day. Let us live in the light so that we can bring it to others in this year of hope.
