April 26.   “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to all creation.” Mk. 16:9-15

It is disconcerting in today’s Gospel to read that final sentence: sending on a mission that seems utopian when we stop to see who is sending, who is being sent and at what time. It is Jesus’ command to his disciples, those who had been with him, but had abandoned him at the moment of his passion. Jesus, already Risen, after having given them proof that He is alive, rebukes them because they have not believed despite the testimony of those who have seen him; even so, Jesus sends them out. At another time He will tell them to wait for the coming of the Spirit that He has promised them, because then they will have the strength to go out and proclaim with courage. What does this Gospel say today to us, who call ourselves believers in the Resurrection? Do we feel that impulse to mission? Do we trust in the strength we have already received since our baptism?
