“Behold, beware of every kind of covetousness. For even if a man lives in abundance, his life does not depend on his possessions.” Lk. 12:13-21
Today’s Gospel presents us with the situation that two brothers were experiencing with regard to the distribution of the inheritance that one of them had received. Jesus clarifies that He does not have the authority to force one of them to share what he has received, but He gives them both a piece of advice, that of beware “of all kinds of covetousness”. Jesus’ gaze leads him to focus more on what is fundamental…on the wealth that God is for us, because this life is fleeting and, therefore, also everything it contains. With his teaching, Jesus suggests to the two brothers that there is something greater, that there is someone greater in whom to put their trust and all their efforts. He also wants to give us the message of spending our lives on what lasts forever, on what is ultimate, on what really matters. To what am I giving my life? In what or in whom am I investing my energies?
