“Repay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” Mt. 22:15-21
Faced with the elaborate question that Herod’s supporters ask Jesus, He responds with wise words, as He usually does before those who want to have evidence to accuse him of rebellion or such matters. In the answer that Jesus gives, He makes it clear that the money belongs to the one who has the inscription on it; and in a very subtle way He invites his listeners to ask themselves what belongs to God in order to “pay” it. He also invites us today to think. So, what belongs to God, and how can we repay Him? Following the logic of the monetary coins, what inscription and or face, do they have, that demands payment? In our prayer today, may we become aware of what belongs to God because He created all that is, so that following Jesus’ instruction, we can pay God what is just, because all is his.
