Mk. 12:18-27 “God is not a God of the dead but of the living.”
With this phrase Jesus ends another of those attempts at dialogue with his enemies. Jesus knows well that the problem they pose to him about the wife who had several husbands is more of a trap and a way of ridiculing faith in the resurrection. Jesus, as always, places them on another plane and leads them to think of their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, Jacob whom they consider their fathers in the faith, they are still alive in their memory and encourage them to remain faithful to their God, the God of Promise. The Resurrection of Jesus and his descent into hell, as we confess in the Creed, will be the ultimate proof that God is a God of the living and leads all those who have believed in Him since ancient times to enjoy eternal life, a life in God that is not like this ephemeral life we live today.
