“He who keeps my word will not see death.” Jn. 8:51-59.Jesus utters a statement that shakes his listeners: “Whoever keeps my word will not see death.” His questioners remain in a literal understanding and are scandalized. For them, death is the inevitable end; for Jesus, true life is born of communion with him. When Jesus declares, “Before Abraham was, I Am,” He reveals his deepest identity. He does not present himself only as a teacher, but as the One in whom God makes himself present. This truth is unbearable for those who cling to their religious securities and are unwilling to open themselves to something new. Jesus does not impose himself by force; His word remains as an invitation to believe and to live. Do we listen to Jesus’ word as a way of life or as a threat to our securities?
