A clean heart create for me, O God. (Psalm 51)
Psalm 51 is one of the most well-known psalms that has inspired numerous songs and served as the words of our prayers of repentance. Confronted by Nathan, King David had been caught in scandal. David, in response, turns to a merciful God, not offering sacrifices, but rather offering his broken heart. This liturgical season is a continuous call for each of us to turn to the same merciful God, offering our hearts, pleading that our offenses be wiped clean, asking God to create a new heart and a steadfast spirit, and begging that God remains present in our lives. Like David, we trust that the Father will not spurn us.
