“This teaching with authority is new!” Mk. 1:21b-28

Jesus teaches in the synagogue in Capernaum, where the people are accustomed to hearing from authorized teachers. We do not know what He taught that day, but we do know the impact it produced; It was so amazing that an unclean spirit reacted with screams, unable to bear its teaching. Jesus, with the authority given to him by the Spirit of God, distinguishes between the person and the evil that inhabits him, and commands the spirit to be silenced, leaving the man free. He does not come to destroy anyone, but to give life. His teaching humanizes and frees from slavery. People exclaim, “This teaching with authority is new.” It is a call to distinguish between the person and the shortcomings that condition his behavior.
