In today’s liturgy we contemplate a terrible, overwhelming historical event, the bearer of a mystery that overwhelms us: the fact of Jesus’ death on the Cross and the mystery of life and salvation that arise from that incomprehensible fact. Jesus dies a victim of sin, on him was unleashed all the violence, injustice, betrayal, corruption, that accumulation of sins that is still the cause of all the pain of humanity today. Christ dies on the cross to show that life triumphs over death and that God is greater than all the evil in the world. And Jesus gives his Spirit so that those of us who follow his path may live a new life, fulfilling his commandment and proclaiming the Good News of salvation to the world. Let us contemplate that cross for a long time and listen to the words of Jesus.
