Jesus continues to try to make known to the Jews his true identity: He reveals himself in his constant reference to God his Father; but his listeners, guided only by the criteria of the world to which they belong, are incapable of understanding that revelation that surpasses everything that the world can accept. Jesus concludes with another of his blunt statements: “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM.” Only by contemplating the cross and the way in which God the Father gives us his Son, can we know who Jesus is, who we are for Him and who, that the Father who in Jesus has chosen us to be His children.
