“And now, Israel, listen.” (Deut. 4:1)
Israel is a people who have become accustomed to not having images of God. His Word is sufficient for them. God is a God who speaks, who guides them on what they should do or not do in order to become “a great nation” of wise and intelligent men. Jesus himself, a good Jew, warns his listeners that He has not come to destroy the law, but to bring it to its perfection. Because the perfection of the Law is Love, and He Himself is the presence of that inconceivable Love that God has had for us humans. To love as Jesus loved, this was grasped by Jeanne de Lestonnac, Ignatius of Loyola, Therese of the Child Jesus, Saint Laura, Father de Foucault… Entering the school of Jesus is demanding. Loving is not easy. It is a commandment. Are we teaching it this way to our children and to our children’s children? Are we really listeners of the Word?”
