“And in the age to come, eternal life.” (Mk. 10:31)

Today the Gospel invites us to think about the journey, about following…about pursuing, about a reward. Yes, about a reward! It is a Gospel in which Jesus does the math and speaks of a hundredfold. It is also concrete: the disciples will not lack persecutions, Jesus does not want to deceive anyone, but although there will be persecution, the reward will be eternal life. Let’s stop and think about what eternal life means to us today. In the year of the Jubilee, in the year of invitation to conversion, it is time to take stock of what we carry, what prevents us from walking, in what we would like to start again. Let us keep these three words from today’s Gospel: “leave everything,” “receive a reward,” and “eternal life.” We can dialogue with Jesus with the spontaneity with which Peter does.
