And he might send them forth to preach

Jesus appoints 12 apostles who he will form over the next few years to continue the mission.  Maybe some of the 12 thought they chose to follow Christ, but they would soon learn they had been chosen.  What did they think about being joined with a rather motley crew with such diverse backgrounds, especially a tax collector. They may have wondered what they possibly had to give, just as we may wonder ourselves, yet, we have been called with all our gifts and limitations.  We are asked only to put who we are at the feet of Jesus and trust that he will use our gifts in ways that we may or may not see clearly.
