August 26 (Matt. 23:13-22)

Keep your eyes on what really matters.

In today’s gospel, Jesus has strong words for the scribes and Pharisees.  The entire chapter is one of listing their sins.  It is bad enough that their actions keep them out of the kingdom of heaven, but far worse is blocking others who seek to enter.  They set themselves up as experts, but are in fact, hypocrites, more worried about the small details of the law and taking oaths while failing to see what is most important.  It is easy to read this text and feel it is addressed to other people.  Still, we must ask ourselves when do we act the hypocrite? When are we working in our ministry with misguided priorities that put us in the front rather than following Christ?
