August 12 (Matt 17:22-27)

August 12 (Matt 17:22-27)

They will kill him, but he will rise again.

This is an odd story with Jesus telling the disciples of his coming passion and resurrection followed by a tax question and a fish with money inside!  In the previous chapter, Jesus tells the disciples the same thing regarding the coming passion and Peter reacts strongly.  This second declaration leaves them deeply grieved.  Suddenly, the tax collector challenges Peter on whether Jesus is paying the temple tax.  The later conversation between Peter and Jesus has Christ claiming once again his sonship with the Father, but also giving Peter a miraculous solution to the tax issue so as to avoid unnecessary difficulties with temple officials.  Despite this novel solution, Jesus also teaches trust in the Father that what we need will be provided.
