“God so loved the world that He gave his only Son…”
We can begin today’s prayer by making a “composition of place”, the here and now of our world, the one that has touched us. You can reconstruct the news from the newspaper or TV… those that come from far and near… those brought by social networks… Remember the faces, the ages, the nationalities, the long lines of migrants that are already familiar to us… and end with the published statistics… Acknowledge the feelings that these realities awaken in you.
And now read in the Gospel of John the continuation of Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus: after assuring him that the Jews are also recipients of salvation, He makes an unexpected revelation, which we can put in the present because for God there is no past or future: “God loves this world so much that He gave his only Son, that none of those who believe in Him should perish, but that they should have eternal life.” Do you understand what that means for us today? God does not want anyone to perish. He deserves that we thank him on our knees and ask for the grace that we may all open ourselves to that love.
