“The time of childbirth was fulfilled” Lk. 1:57-66

We are getting closer and closer to Christmas. The texts of these days have made us contemplate announcements of life. God never tires of gestating life.

Today the Gospel puts before us the birth of John the Baptist. He is born to elderly parents; however, God makes this possible because for Him nothing is impossible.

John’s arrival splits human history in two.  John the Baptist belongs to the first stage, symbolized in the time before the entrance into the Promised Land. Now, the presence of Jesus and the proclamation of his Kingdom have become the true promised land and everyone who welcomes him is greater than the Baptist because he has been granted to live the time of the fulfillment of the promises.

John’s life had only one meaning: preparing the way for Jesus. Aren’t we also called to be a bit like ‘John the Baptist’, in charge of preparing the way for others to know Jesus?
