Mk.. 12:13-17 “Jesus asked them, ‘Whose image is this?'”Jesus’ enemies never cease to put him to the test; today the Gospel shows us how they raise the question of the tax they had to pay to the Emperor. Jesus, knowing their malice, responds to them in a way that leaves them speechless: if what is on the coins of the tax is the image of the Emperor, give him what is his. But Jesus adds: give to God what is God’s; what belongs to God are others, the neighbor whom he commands us to love; for it is His children whom He created in His image and belong to Him; it is the poor who suffer, the marginalized with whom He identifies; what we do or fail to do for them we do or deny to God himself; in them too is the image of God.
