Lk. 11:29-32: “…No sign will be given to them other than Jonah’s.”

Jesus finds himself in front of a crowd that asks him for an extraordinary sign, a spectacular test in order to believe in him. Jesus responds firmly that, to that generation, “…No sign will be given to them other than Jonah’s.” Jesus is the true sign of God who is already among us, in our lives, in our communities, in the excluded. There is no need for spectacular tests; it is enough to open our heart.

We can be tempted to ask for “signs” to believe, “Lord, if you grant me this, I will believe more.” But true faith does not depend on conditions.  Do we seek God only when we need “miracles” in our lives, in our community, in our family, or do we also recognize Him in the small and everyday things? May we not be like that generation that asked for proof, but like the Ninevites, who listened and were converted.
