Mt. 18:1-5, 10: “… Whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven “
Many times searches according to human criteria are opposed to those of Jesus. The disciples sought “greatness,” power, prestige, recognition. Jesus takes a radical turn because in the Kingdom of God greatness is not measured by power, but by humility and smallness. The true disciple does not seek to impose himself, but to serve. “To become like a child” means to live simply, without pretensions to greatness, without believing oneself superior to others.
In Jesus’ day, children had no rights or status; they were the most fragile, dependent and unprotected. Jesus puts them as a model to enter the Kingdom, for this reason he demands that we recognize our own smallness, live in trust and open ourselves to God’s gratuitousness.
