“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
Jn. 1:47-51
The beginning of the conversation that Jesus has with Nathanael is touching because in it we can find ourselves identified when Jesus tells him that He saw him when he was “under the fig tree”. That is, the initiative is always Jesus’ because He saw us and loved us first. In addition to being touching, this statement of Jesus is liberating because if He already knows us, it means that there is nothing to hide, we have nothing to hide in His presence. Nathanael was struck by Jesus’ answer and it was enough for him to recognize that He, who knew Him, was the Son of God. Let’s take a moment to answer: what do we feel knowing that God knows us so well?
