“You shall love the Lord your God, and your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:34-40
Sadducees and Pharisees put Jesus to the test: “Teacher, what is the greatest commandment of the Law?” The question was not simple: some defended the Sabbath, others love of neighbor, but it had not occurred to anyone that the main commandment was actually two. Jesus recites the “shema” that every faithful Israelite prayed twice a day, and adds love to one’s neighbor as oneself. Both loves, inseparable, are the heart of the Law. Let us ask the Lord for the grace to listen in order to put into practice this commandment of love.
