“He sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick.” Lk. 9:1-6

Jesus associates the Twelve with his same mission. He gives them authority, but asks them to go lightly: no cane, no saddlebag, no bread, no money. It is an invitation to trust only in God’s providence and in the hospitality of our brothers and sisters. Let us remember that the effectiveness of the proclamation does not depend on our material means, but on our witness of life. What material attachments detract from our agility and freedom to proclaim the Gospel with joy? We are sent to bring healing and the Good News. Let us ask him to help us discover what unnecessary “baggage” we must get rid of in order to be credible witnesses of the simplicity of the Kingdom of God.
