“Follow me. He got up and followed him.” Mt. 9:9-13

Today we celebrate Saint Matthew, the tax collector. Jesus passes by, looks at him with mercy and addresses a word to him that transforms his whole existence: “Follow me”. Matthew makes no excuses; he leaves his collection table and organizes a banquet to celebrate this encounter. Jesus reminds us that He has not come to call the righteous, but sinners, seeking healing where there is frailty. Today, what comforts or securities do we cling to that prevent us from getting up and following his call? His loving gaze chooses us despite our weaknesses. Let us ask him to help us discover what we need to leave behind to walk with him and how to sit at the table with those whom society rejects.
