“May the greatest among you be your servant.” Mt. 23:1-12 Today’s Gospel presents us with Jesus, speaking with clarity and courage, standing tall on the flatland, his words seek to awaken conscience, by denouncing a dangerous attitude: to say one thing and live another. Every time we teach virtues and values, give advice, or assist in community discernment, we are called to practice what we preach. Incoherence weakens testimony and undermines credibility. Jesus on the flatland also teaches about the temptation of protagonism and proclaims how, on the other hand, greatness in the Kingdom of God is measured by selfless service. “Let the greatest among you be your servant. How do we exercise authority in the family and community? Do we seek to serve or to be recognized?  In that flatland of life, Jesus reminds us that “he who exalts himself will be humbled; and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
