Lk. 13:1-9: “Let us see if it bears fruit in the future.”

At that time, many thought that misfortunes were a punishment from God for sins. Jesus breaks with that mentality; neither the Galileans nor the Siloans were more guilty than others. But He adds a serious warning: “If they are not converted, they will all perish in the same way.” Jesus tells of a man who, over the course of three years, looks for fruit on a fig tree and does not find it. He decides to cut it, but the vinedresser intercedes: “Lord, leave it still this year, I will dig around it and put fertilizer on it, to see if it will bear fruit.” This parable reveals God’s patience and mercy; He does not condemn us immediately, but gives us opportunities, time, and care. But it is also a serious call; Life cannot be sterile, we are called to bear fruits of love and justice. The hope is that God takes care of us, gives us new opportunities and “fertilizes” us with his Word, his grace, and his patience to “see” if we bear fruit in the future
