Saints and sinners Mt.16:13-23
Today’s text makes us think of the definition that the Jesuits gave of themselves in the General Congregation No. 34 and which, turned into a song, says: “Saints and sinners, sinners and saints. All made of clay, but all called.” It is striking that Matthew brings together in only 10 verses, the praise that Jesus makes of Peter, and the responsibility that He entrusts to him… with the rejection made by Jesus himself, calling him “Satan, because he thinks like men not like God”. The Liturgy today invites us to meditate on both the lights and the shadows that are in Peter and in each one of us. Saints and sinners we are all loved. In some ways, it is the very contrast that is at the basis of our faith. We believe in a “God-Crucified.” May today’s prayer help us to penetrate into the “logic of God” and to enter into it.
