“Do not neglect your own.” (Isaiah 58:7)

But does religious fasting still exist? A fast to try to convince God that we are good, or that we are rightly repairing our faults? “The fast that God wants is to loosen the unrighteous chains, to loosen the straps of the yoke, to free the oppressed, to break all yokes, to share your bread with the hungry, to welcome the impoverished homeless, to cover those you see naked, and not to neglect your own.” (Isaiah 58:6-7) We are permanently tempted by individualism, by an ‘every man for himself’, by the thousand and one apologies that lead us to disregard others. Let us go through our last 24 hours, our last week, consider how others have been, especially the most fragile, the poor…How have they been present in our attention, in our way of way of treating them?
