When Jesus says at his Last Supper: “This is my body”, and offers us a share of broken bread, He leaves us the strongest symbol of himself, not only because of the gift of the cross, but because of his union with all those who would be, in time, his Church. We are the body of Christ in our world. St. Augustine says: “The Eucharist is our daily bread, the bread of time. And we are to receive it not only as food that nourishes the body, but also the mind. The virtue symbolized in it is unity, so that we ourselves may be what we receive: members of Christ integrated into his body. Only then will He be our daily bread. “Those who receive the body of Christ are one with Him.” “Eating this food and drinking this drink is the same as abiding in Christ and having Jesus Christ.”
