The vocation of the Apostle Peter is truly exciting. How many times did he deny Jesus, how many times did he disagree with Him and even opposed His plans. Peter, the coward, and yet he is entrusted with the care of the sheep. A beautiful ending to the 4th Gospel: “feed my sheep”. It is simply a matter of personal love for Jesus. Love is above all in works, as St. Ignatius of Loyola said. There is an act that is not doing things but an acting, a service, a way of relating, that builds up the other. There is an action that is proper to love; To look at Jesus in this post-Easter presence, in his way of making himself present, consoling, serving the table, cooking the fish on the coals, letting himself be seen…this is his way of continuing to love.
