“I know whom I have chosen”

Jesus has just made a gesture as endearing as it is unexpected: washing the feet of his disciples. It is the prelude to the Last Supper, the last Easter with them. He knows those He has chosen; He knows their hearts. He knows that the mystery of human freedom penetrates the most sacred realms. Jesus is not scandalized by the fact that infidelity and betrayal are nesting in one of his own. Now the Scriptures are clear to him: “He who shares my bread will betray me.”

This shameful event is history, it has already happened. And it’s Easter, not Maundy Thursday. However, we know, probably from our own experience, that we do not respond to Jesus with the same love and faithfulness that He shows us. Pope Francis has helped us to give names to these deceptive attitudes: arrogance, spiritual worldliness… Pray to recognize them in yourself and in your environment and humbly ask for forgiveness.
