“Did you come early to torment us?” Matthew 8:28-34.

Today’s Gospel places Jesus in the encounter with two demon-possessed men who have emerged from the tomb, a sign of death; they were so violent that no one dared to pass near them; they were excluded from any social environment. They cried out, “Son of God!” What do you have to do with us? We beg you not to torment us, if you drive us out, send us to the pigs. Jesus confronts the evil that permeates society: injustice, inequality, corruption, etc. Jesus’ capacity to love breaks and unmasks evil, to make way for the urgent, the construction of a lasting and saving peace, which is only possible from social justice and solidarity with those where evil nestles and there is only dehumanization; to return to salvation is to restore dignity. How are we living our being as prophets, where evil makes noise?
